1.Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (Japan Student Services Organization)
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers honors scholarships for privately financed international students who attend a university or graduate school in Japan, are of good character, have a good academic record, and require financial assistance to continue their studies as an international student.
Eligibility:
international students who have the “College Student” status and meet the following requirements:
◦Undergraduate level: privately financed international students enrolled as a regular student in a university undergraduate school
◦Postgraduate level: privately financed international students enrolled as a regular student or a research student in a university graduate school
*This scholarship is not available to Japanese Government scholarship students or foreign state-sponsored students.
Scholarship amount:
◦Undergraduate level: \48,000/month
◦Postgraduate level: \65,000/month
Announcement:
JASSO will announce scholarships through educational institutions such as universities around April each year.
Recommendations:
recommendations may be made through universities to JASSO by early June. Notification: after the screening process by the Selection Committee, successful candidates will be notified through universities around early July.
Payment:
scholarship payments will be made every month after the confirmation of a grantee’s continued enrollment.
2.Scholarship for International Students, The University of Tokyo Foundation
Eligibility: privately financed international students (excluding foreign state-sponsored students) who:
◦are of good character and have good academic records,
◦are enrolled as regular students or research students in a postgraduate course at one of The University of Tokyo graduate schools,
◦require assistance with school expenses and do not receive other scholarships for the duration of this fellowship,(over \50,000)
◦have the status of “College Student” , and
◦do not have a spouse who is a scholarship student financed by the Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) for the duration of the fellowship.
* Scholarship amount: \50,000/month

3.Provision of information regarding private organizations’ scholarships
Approximately 80 private organizations offer scholarships to privately financed international students. There are 2 application methods – recommendation by a university, and individual application. Although some organizations may start application invitations around October, the invitation process is carried out from January to April with most scholarship programs.

<1. Doctorate Program and Master Program>
The master's degree is normally awarded to a student if he/she has satisfied
the following requirements: at least two years in residence in the master's
program; acquisition of the course credits required by the Graduate Schools
for Law and Politics, an acceptable master's thesis written under the guidance
of a faculty member; and passing the final comprehensive examination.
The doctorate degree is normally awarded to a student if he/she has satisfied the following requirements: at least three years in residence in the doctoral program; acquisition of the course credits required by the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics; an acceptable doctoral thesis written under the guidance of a faculty member; and passing the final comprehensive examination.

May for the following academic year, and July for the doctoral program.

<2. School of Law>
The School of Law is designed for those who intend to become practicing
lawyers. After completing the course, students are entitled to take the
bar examination.

Applications to the School of Law are available from July.
(Application Deadline: late October)

(2)Time of Admission ・・・・
The time of admission for the students of the School of Law will be at
the beginning of each school year (April).
<3. Postgraduate International Research Students>
A foreigner wishing to study a specific subject at the
postgraduate level may be admitted in the capacity of a Postgraduate
International Research Student (Kenkyusei). A student in this category is not
entitled to any degree or qualification even upon completion of his/her study
program.
(1)General Requirements for Admission ・・・・
The same qualifications are required of a prospective postgraduate non-degree
student as are required of a degree candidate for the master's program
or the doctoral program. A person who has graduated or expects to graduate
from a Japanese university is not eligible to apply for an International
Research Student.

(a)Applicants who have passed the first stage of scholarship examination at
Japanese Embassies/Consulates General, or who have passed the
scholarship examination of Interchange Association, Japan

(3)Selection
(a)Applicants who have passed the first stage of scholarship examination at
Japanese Embassies/Consulates General, or who have passed the
scholarship examination of Interchange Association, Japan
Selection will be made on the basis of the documents submitted.
(b)General applicants
Selection will be made on the basis of the documents submitted.
Applicants who pass this preliminary screening will be required to take
an oral examination for admission to the University. Those who apply from
abroad will be notified to come to Japan to take the oral examination.
(4)Time of Admission
Time of admission for Postgraduate International Research Students will
be at the beginning of each semester, April and October.
(5)Period of Registration
Normally the period of registration for a Postgraduate International Research
Student is one year, however, this period may be renewed upon request if
the student's research warrants it. (The maximum period of stay is up to
3 years.)

<2. Scholarships/Monbukagakusho Scholarship>
It is quite hard to get any kind of scholarship here in Japan. You should
apply for scholarships in your home country before leaving for Japan. If
you go to the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your country, you
can get both information and an application form to apply for a Monbukagakusho
Scholarship, which the Japanese Government offers to International students
to study in Japan. (The University of Tokyo does not distribute the application
form for Monbukagakusho Scholarships.)

<3. Accommodation Facilities>
The University operates the University of Tokyo International Lodges (Shirokanedai and Komaba), Mitaka International Students Hall, and Toshima International Students Hall which provide lodging facilities for students and researchers from abroad. The accommodations, however, are limited, and most students live in dormitories of private foundations, or in apartments or rooming houses.

<4. Japanese Language Program>
We offer Japanese Language lessons, however basically it is very hard to
get into the intensive course if you are not a Monbukagakusho Scholarship
Student. Please remember that you are required to have advanced Japanese
language ability to be accepted to our department.

Ⅳ.FAQ
Q:Japanese language proficiency is required at the GSLP(Graduate Schools
for Law and Politics)?
A:To be able to read and understand literature written in Japanese.
Your proficiency more or less should be at or above of level 1of the
Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
Q:Can I apply to the GSLP, if my university major is different?
A:Yes. However, you will need to have knowledge approximating to the level of
university graduated.
Q:Is it necessary to contact faculty members before applying to the GSLP?
A:No.
Q:How can I contact faculty members of the GSLP?
A:If they do not disclose their e-mail, please send any correspondence to the
